  • If you have ever used a period correct backpack or haversack, or any pack manufactured befor 1970, you know two things:  (1) They're generally thin and narrow (2) they tend to cut into your shoulders particularly on long treks. One period solution was to add aftermarket pads, or make them yourself. I have  Bergan Pack from the 1930s in my collection that suggested this home-made solution. On the Bergan pack you could add mouton padding that fit on the shoulder straps. Mouton not being abundant in the US, sheepskin were used.

Thes will fit on any strap up to 2" wide. They'll work as a pad on our Keewaydin bag harness, Dave Canterbury's moder Duluth pack Replica and Badger Claw strap harness, or any period Yucca pack or haversack strap.
