  • Weather prevents us from taking pictures of these in a pristine woodland environment, so we're going to post this with bench shots because folks have said they want one. We'll take the famdancy pictures once we can get out into the woods.

These ground pads, while they do provide a measure of comfort, are designed more to keep you alive in cold weather by providing an uncrushable insulating layer between your body and the surface of the planet, which will suck heat right out of it.

A sturdy bed ticking envelope encases three layers of blanket thickness wool shoddy (similar to Batting) adding up to 5/8" with an air space between each layer. Hand tufting keeps the insulation from shifting and bunching. Using the lowest R value calculation for wool batt at R-3.6 per inch, this should yield an R value of R-2.25 +/- so these are not intended for deep winter conditions but should be good for the "shoulder seasons". Add about half of the R value of your sleeping bag to this calculation (your body will crush the insulation in the bag reducing its effectiveness).

Using the Long Pad and folding it in half to make a torso length pad would bring the R value to somewhere around R4-4.5. I think the best value for those contemplating year-round use would be the Long as it can be used full length pad for most of the year and a torso length in colder weather.

Specifications: 84" +/- long x 21 +/-" wide and about 1/2"-5/8" thick. Uncompressed it rolls into a 7 1/2" diameter cylinder and will fit in our Cot Duffel (with a bit of compression and straps it will fit in the Standard Duffel). Weight is 3# 8 oz.  Available as a Custom Order, please allow one week for delivery.
