Kitchen Roll Without Contents
When in camp, organization is important. The period solution, as it is today, is to pack in "kits". Your possibles are packed in easily identifiable packages that can serve as your cabinets and drawers at the campsite. Our Kitchen Roll is just such a kit. Your flatware and food prep tools are in one package and will be easily at hand when you need it in camp.
Made of sturdy vintage Herring Bone Twill Bed ticking outer shell and a muslin liner, with 7 narrow pockets in the lower section for flatware and two large pockets in the upper section for towels or napkins. These are made specifically for our flatware and food prep tools and may or may not fit all of yours.
Muslin liners, sometimes "enameled" or painted cloth was common in homemade goods for items considered needing to be "sanitory". The purpose is so that the user can more easily see when it, and thus the contents, are dirty. We've replicated that ethos and have constructed the Kitchen Roll so that it can hang from a branch or line while in camp.
Many of our sewn products are constructed of NOS 20th Century natural fiber fabrics. I purchase these fabrics that I find in Estate Sales, flea markets, antique stores, and other sources and will use them when available. You should expect to find storage wear, minor water staining, and discolorations. All fabric is washed and ironed before sewing. In this case, this roll is constructed using the same method, materials, and manner that Gramma would have used in the 1920's: cut up an old mattress and sheets and use the material for something smaller.
