  • This is not a direct reproduction of a commercial product, but is a sleeping bag as would have been made by local Tent & Awning Company, Hardware store, or Department Store and it represents the improved understanding of how a proper sleeping bag should be made in the late 1920s.

Prior to this point in the History of Camping gear, the form of sleeping bags had yet to see a consensus, but it was beginning to gel as a rectangular side opening bag that closed completely to retain heat.

The first pic shows the reproduction (on the left) next to a bag known to be made in 1917. Both feature long tubes of fabric filled with an insulation, but the 1917 version opens at the top and has no closure while the reproduction has the same method of construction but opens on the side and has a draft tube that folds over the opening and snaps shut with 5 metal snaps, a construction method we see starting post WW1.

These are made using the reproduction CCC Comforter sold by What Price Glory and my price reflects the retail cost of that product plus the labor involved in transforming it into a sleeping bag representative of the 1920s. The polyester fill allows for lower cost while retaining insulative performance consistent and with cotton and kapok insulations of the period while retaining the visual appearance and feel of a part of the reproduction that cannot be seen. It is a comfortably roomy 76" long by 32" wide with a 33" long opening on the side. It weighs 4# 4.9 oz.

We have one complete and ready for immediate sale, and two others that are being sold on a custom order basis. I can do more of these on a custom order basis but those would be dependent on availability of the comforters at WPG.

Legal tells me that I need to say that this is a reproduction of an Early 20th Century sleeping bag using methods, machines, and materials common during the period 1890-1930, a period when there were no government standards for the construction of sleeping bags. It does not conform to current government standards for comfort and fire rating. It is provided as an historical curiosity for public display and theatrical use.
